On August 6, 1945, the course of warfare changed forever. On this date, the Enola Gay was sent to Japan to drop an atomic bomb. The Enola Gay released a 9,000 pound bomb dubbed "Little Boy" over the city of Hiroshima, Japan. When the bomb detonated, sixty-six thousand people were vaporized instantly and total destruction ranged for one mile in diameter.
The Enola Gay was an American B-29 Bomber commanded by Colonel Paul Tibbets.

The "little boy" bomb used the gun type assembly method. Chemical explosives were detonated in the rear of the bomb causing a uranium mass to shoot down the barrel and into another deposit of uranium causing a nuclear chain reaction.
