On August 9, 1945, a second atomic bomb was dropped on Japan. The Bockscar released the ten thousand pound "fat man" bomb over the city of Nagasaki. Originally the strike was supposed to occur over the city of Kokura, but poor weather led to the decision to pursue the second option. By the end of the year, over eighty thousand people had died in the attack with destruction ravaging most of the city.
